What I Learned Today

While scientifically classified as fruit, tomatoes in the United States are lawfully vegetables - having been designated thus by the Supreme Court in 1893.

    Hm… I didn’t know that part about them lawfully being vegetables. How does something lawfully become a vegetable?

    I had heard that, Terry, though I’m not sure why. Also, the French considered the tomato an aphrodisiac, and called it the pomme d’amour (love apple).

    As for the legal vegetable status, Rebecca, I’m not quite sure - though it had something to do with import tariffs. How something like that got all the way to the Supreme Court is beyond me - though I know a few people who probably ought to be reclassified as vegetables too.
